Hosted by STL Instructor Joe Subolefsky
Workshop limited to a maximum of two participants, includes six sessions photographing various duck species and many bonus species.
The workshop combines two great, vastly different, locations in one spectacular event. Participants will begin at one location with three photography sessions capturing species such as American Wigeon, Canvasbacks, Redheads, Greater and Lesser Scaup and more. Bonus species includes additional waterfowl such as swans, Snow Geese and various owl species.
I have been shooting at this at this location for many years. This location offers a unique opportunity to be eye to eye with many diving waterfowl species that are usually found far from shore.
During the second half of the workshop, participants will travel 90 minutes to a new location and will focus on Wood Ducks. Participants will enjoy two morning sessions photographing Wood Ducks and usually opportunities to photograph Belted Kingfishers fishing and interacting with their mate; an afternoon shooting Snow Geese, Bald Eagles, fishing Osprey or various species depending on timing, migration and weather.
I’ve been photographing Wood Ducks at this location for many, many years. Belted Kingfishers, Barn Swallows, Pileated Woodpeckers, Red-winged Blackbirds, Green-winged Teal, Mallards and more are found in this marsh. Wood Ducks being the most skittish of the ducks, it is difficult to happen upon one that sticks around long enough to photograph. Using a remote location, the cover of darkness and a custom designed blind, we can provide a once in a lifetime experience in the marsh.
This ‘Best of Both Worlds’ workshop provides you with numerous, amazing in-field photographic experiences. Our primary focus will be breeding ducks of all species capping the workshop with Wood Ducks.
Understanding the sun, wind, tide, species personality traits and terrain translates into better imagery. This workshop provides an excellent opportunity to fine tune your bird in flight skills by shooting side by side with a highly awarded (including some photographs from this exact location), internationally recognized, bird in flight photographer. I’ll work with you to optimize your camera and lens settings for this type of shooting. I’ll also make sure you have a firm understanding of how to capture the perfect bird in flight shot (hands on shooting skills). Taking a small group of participants allows more one on one time to work though your in the field questions.
Diving ducks are the primary focus for the first half of the adventure. With a large group of birds usually present, this is a great time to capture birds in flight, behavioral interaction, and portraits.
Includes: Photographic instruction, six sessions in the field shooting, three at each location.
Not Included: Travel to Maryland, accommodations, meals, personal items, travel to second location (90 minutes from the first location). Transportation from the hotel to the marsh and various other shooting locations.
