Wood Duck Weekend
April 26th-28th, 2024
Hosted by Joe Subolefsky
Workshop limited to a maximum of two participants, includes two morning sessions photographing wood ducks and usually ample opportunities to photograph Belted Kingfishers fishing and interacting with their mate; an afternoon shooting Snow Geese, Bald Eagles, fishing Osprey or various duck species depending on timing, migration and weather.
We’ve been photographing Wood Ducks at this location for many, many years. Understanding the sun, wind, personality traits and terrain translates into better imagery.
While Wood Ducks are the primary focus, the various residents of the wetland habitat may make appearances throughout the time in the field. Belted Kingfishers, Barn Swallows, Pileated Woodpeckers, Red-winged Blackbirds, Green-winged Teal, Mallards and more are particularly abundant in this marsh. Wood Ducks being the most skittish of the ducks, it is difficult to happen upon one that sticks around long enough to photograph. Using a remote location, the cover of darkness and a custom designed blind, we can provide a once in a lifetime experience in the marsh.
This workshop provides you with an amazing in-field photographic experience. Our primary focus will be breeding Wood Ducks; small, stunning birds, with bright iridescent colors and tear drop shaped eye-rings that pop. With a handful of birds usually present this is a great time to capture behavioral interaction, and portraits, along with both males and females in relation to their nesting boxes.
