Salt Water Ponies, VA
May 17-20, 2023 (Full)
Joins Shoot the Light Host, Joe Subolefsky for this intimate workshop.
Enjoy the coastal island of Chincoteague, VA for a fun opportunity photographing wild ponies by boat. We time this excursion to coincide with foaling season and last year photographed newborns and several week old foals all from the water at a safe, ethical distance. Numerous sightings and our small group give you the perfect chance to find tune your photography skills.
It is believed these ponies are direct descendants of ponies on board a Spanish sailing ship wrecked on the island in the 17th century. In 2021 a DNA test was conducted on a tooth of a confirmed Spanish horse from a colony in Haiti. The DNA on the recovered tooth matched DNA from the local Chincoteague ponies, confirming the connection to the Spanish herd that was shipwrecked on the island.
