Shoot the Light, Charles Glatzer – Ranks number 1 in photographic workshops!
After going to Yellowstone with Shoot the Light and Charles Glatzer, I felt it necessary to write a testimonial to my experience. I procrastinated. But now after two weeks with Chas on his Falklands workshop (he had been there 10 times) I feel remiss in not having written about Yellowsetone. I feel remiss because Chas’s workshops are really special and I want those who like me look for the best workshops to know what they can experience with Chas and Shoot the Light. I have been on about 10 photographic workshops to some of the most beautiful places with other leaders. Chas workshops are without peer. Chas’s workshops are all about the participants. He shares, teaches, shows, and most importantly interacts in every step of the process. His greatest delight is that we get the images not that he does. His knowledge and ability to explain difficult processes concisely and at the same time profoundly, while being patient with us, results in an unequaled experience. In addition it becomes quickly clear the he knows where to go and when to be there. His wildlife knowledge is second only to his photographic knowledge. Also, the logistics work amazingly well. You only have to look at Chas’s images to know that he is an extraordinary photographer, but based on my experiences with him he is also an, extraordinary naturalist and teacher. He holds nothing back he shares what he calls his “process” which is being prepared with equipment, locations and most importantly an idea of what image you are looking to capture. Also he explains his philosophy and how processes his images. Those of us who want to progress to the highest levels of photography should not forego the opportunity to learn from a truly rare talent, Chas. In addition to all I have said I must add he is a great guy to hang out with…….their are no ego trips.

Having been to the Falklands 10 times now I have the group concentrate on individual species at specific locations on each island visited. Time of day and tidal influence are a key factor in determining when and where we go on each island. Knowing what to expect and look for ahead of time can often make the difference between capturing a mediocre image and the photo of a lifetime.

This years schedule include 3 night stay at "the neck" on Saunders. The "neck" is without doubt one of the worlds most awe inspiring wildlife sites on earth. Our extended time here affords the best image making possible, in both sunrise and sunset lighting. An additional day will be spent at the Saunders Rookery. We have also scheduled 2 days at Volunteer Pt for King Penguins, as well as 3 nights respectively on Bleaker and Sea Lion Islands, making this one of the most incredible trips to date.
Join me for two weeks of incredible photography off the beaten track in the Falkland Islands. We will photograph a large variety of approachable bird species including at least four species of penguins; king, magellenic, rockhopper and gentoo as well as black-browed albatross, striated caracara, king and rock cormorants and many other shorebirds, seabirds and passerines. We will also have the opportunity to photograph elephant seals and southern sea lions.
Located east of the southern tip of South America, the Falkland Island archipelago consists of over 700 small islands. Approximately 2500 people live in the Falklands and all but about 500 in the capital of Stanley on East Falkland. The rest are scattered throughout settlements on the smaller islands. We have chosen 4 locations to visit to maximize our photographic opportunities. We will have 4x4 transportation on most of the islands to any of our remote shooting locations. However, most of our shooting will be within walking distance of our accommodations.
The animals have little or no fear of humans they are quite approachable. By sitting quietly and waiting, many of the birds will approach humans out of curiosity. Because of this, a super long lens (500mm or 600mm) is not necessary and due to weight restrictions on inter island flights, difficult to arrange. Lenses in the 17-400mm range along with a teleconverter should cover most if not all situations.
